Lions' Leonard Jackson Takes Part in Lone Star Conference SAAC Summer Retreat

The Lone Star Conference held its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Summer Retreat on July-27-29 in Canyon, Texas on the campus of West Texas A&M with nearly 40 LSC student-athletes and athletic administrators taking part in the event.

The SAAC Summer Retreat allows student-athletes and administrators from across the LSC to meet and talk about issues in the conference.

Texas A&M University-Commerce SAAC advisor and assistant athletic director for compliance Summer Spurlock and football/track student-athlete Leonard Jackson (Dallas, Texas/A. Maceo Smith HS) represented the Lions at the annual meetings.

After the participants arrived on Sunday, everyone met to discuss game environment initiatives, new rule changes and community service among other topics.

Following the meeting, the group headed to Palo Duro Canyon State Park to eat and watch the musical, “Texas.”

The student-athletes and administrators then took part in the “Texas Ramps Project,” helping to build ramps for better accessibility for residents across the state on Monday. The project is a group of volunteers who work “with local cities, social-services organizations and hospitals to identify clients who need a ramp.”

“That was a pretty good experience,” said Jackson.

The student-athletes then filmed a public service announcement that talked about game environment initiatives and will be broadcast during televised LSC games, on Web casts and in other media avenues.

National Division II SAAC representative Chris Odom reported on updates and everyone shared ideas for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in another meeting before finishing the day.

In a final meeting before departing on Tuesday, the SAAC representatives talked about time management, financial planning, health and the LSC SAAC Cup, which will be awarded to the school that gets the most points from having meetings, taking part in community service and raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“Overall, it was a pretty good experience,” said Jackson. “I recommend every athlete to join and get involved with SAAC.”
