While student-athletes at Texas
A&M University-Commerce have recently succeeded on the playing
surface, many have been successful in the classroom as well.
The A&M-Commerce athletic department honored the
student-athletes who have achieved a 3.0 GPA or better or have
maintained an institutional GPA of a 3.0 or better through the 2008
fall semester at the Athletic Director’s Breakfast of
Champions on Friday morning.
“We celebrate this day in conjunction with National
Student-Athlete Day, where all across the country athletes are
being recognized at their various institutions for the hard work
and dedication they put in to not only their athletics, but their
academics as well,” said Associate Athletic Director for
Academic Affairs/SWA Judy Sackfield.
Overall, 78 student-athletes representing all 11 sports,
cheerleading and athletic training, gathered at the event which
included 35 athletes that made the Dean’s List and 11 that
received Presidential honors in the fall semester.
“You all worked hard to be honored and come to this
event,” said A&M-Commerce President Dr. Dan
Jones to the athletes. “Things like GPA really do
matter. Things like graduation rates really do matter.”
Many other administrators, as well as faculty and staff throughout
campus joined the students to celebrate their achievement.
“It is a special day,” said A&M-Commerce Director
of Athletics Carlton Cooper. “Academics is
very near and dear to me. Our vision is to be a nationally
recognized program both academically and athletically.”
