Members of the Texas A&M University-Commerce Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) took part in the Center Court Community Fair at the Jeffries Street Learning Center in Dallas on Saturday, May 2.

The fair, presented by Dallas Regional Chamber’s Leadership Dallas Class of 2009, gave the A&M-Commerce SAAC leaders an opportunity to engage with students of South Dallas and inform them about the university and its athletic department.

“Community relations is a big part of who we are and what we do,” said A&M-Commerce Director of Athletics Carlton Cooper. “The Dallas community is a big part of this community’s past and present, and we want to make sure we have continued visibility in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.”

Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert took part in the opening ceremonies before students participated in multiple events, including a basketball skills clinic, face painting and a step show.

Civic leaders and community partners were also involved in the fair, which celebrated the accomplishments and mission of the Jeffries Street Learning Center, according to the Dallas Regional Chamber Web site.

“The kids at Jeffries Street will be future college students somewhere,” said Cooper. “Hopefully we can have enough impact on them where they will be future Lions."

SAAC members involved in the event included sophomores Taylor Fore, Makesha Brewer, Marquis Stimpson, and juniors Louie Capra and La'Shara Jefferson.
