COMMERCE, Texas -- We are one week away from the annual Ernest Hawkins Golf Classic on Friday, July 27 at Webb Hill Country Club in Wolfe City with slots still available for teams interested in competing.
The event, named after legendary Lion football coach Ernest Hawkins, serves as the main fundraising event for the year as proceeds generated go directly towards funding all 11 A&M-Commerce intercollegiate athletic teams.
It recognizes coach Hawkins, the winningest head football coach in Lion history who roamed the sidelines from 1964 to 1985. He compiled a 132-92-6 (.587) record and guided East Texas State to five Lone Star Conference titles and the 1972 NAIA national championship.
The format is a four-man scramble at a cost of $125 per player or $500 per team. The cost includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, green fees and lunch. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Friday morning with play getting underway at 9 a.m. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100 as various prizes will also be given away throughout the day, as well as a silent auction in the Webb Hill clubhouse.
