FORMER LION ALL-AMERICAN CHAD BROWN INDUCTED INTO TEXAS BLACK SPORTS HALL OF FAME
COMMERCE, Texas – Former Lion All-American and Hall of Famer Chad Brown has been selected as a 2012 Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame inductee. Brown was inducted this past Saturday at the 17th Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon in Dallas.
A native of Dallas and a graduate of Lincoln High School, Brown was a three year letterwinner for the Lions and was a two-time All-Lone Star Conference second team selection at offensive tackle. Blocking for Arthur James, A&M-Commerce’s all-time leading rusher, Brown helped then-East Texas State to the 1966 LSC championship. He was named a Kodak All-American in 1968, teaming up with James to become the first African American All-Americans in program history.
Following his collegiate career, Brown was drafted in the seventh round by the Pittsburgh Steelers and went on to a successful NFL career with the Steelers, Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints. After his playing days, Brown remained active in the NFL, serving as a referee and officiating a pair of Super Bowls, including Super Bowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium.
Brown was inducted into the A&M-Commerce Hall of Fame in 1992 and has served in several sports management capacities, including working as the Executive Manager of Facilities at UCLA before retiring in 2011.
He was one of 10 inductees in the 2012 class, joining notables such as NFL greats Tim Brown, Charles Haley and Gene Upshaw and track and field icon Tommie Smith. He joins a handful of former Lions among the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame, including Harvey Martin, Autry Beamon and John Carlos, Smith's teammate at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
