COMMERCE, Texas -- A&M-Commerce Athletics will be turning pink this weekend as the Lion athletic teams will be hosting their annual breast cancer awareness games on the A&M-Commerce campus. The goal of the weekend is to raise as much money as possible to help in the fight against breast cancer.
The pink weekend gets underway with soccer's Kick Pink match against Eastern New Mexico on Friday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m. The Lions and Zias continue to battle for positioning in the Lone Star Conference standings as Eastern New Mexico is one game ahead of A&M-Commerce, setting up a crucial battle Friday evening at Lion Soccer Field.
Saturday afternoon, volleyball takes center stage, hosting its annual Dig Pink match against Incarnate Word at 1 p.m. A&M-Commerce begins the second half its Lone Star Conference season this weekend as the Lions and Cardinals are currently tied for fifth in the conference standings as A&M-Commerce will look to sweep the season series against Incarnate Word.
Saturday evening, Lion football returns to the turf at Memorial Stadium for its Tackle Pink game, hosting Tarleton State at 6 p.m. A&M-Commerce is looking to build off its 21-14 overtime victory against A&M-Kingsville at Memorial Stadium two weeks ago as the Lions and Texans will battle for the President's Cup. This is the third installment of the annual rivalry game with Tarleton State having won the previous two meetings.
Two other home events bookend what is a busy weekend on the A&M-Commerce campus as volleyball plays host to Texas A&M-Kingsville at 5 p.m. Friday afternoon. The weekend then wraps up Sunday, October 14th at noon when soccer takes to the field against conference-leading West Texas A&M.
Each of the pink events will have live streaming video available at LionAthletics.com, as will Sunday's soccer match against the Lady Buffs (weather permitting).
Each of the Lion teams will be wearing pink to help raise awareness of breast cancer, a disease which has impacted a number of A&M-Commerce student-athletes. Donations will be accepted at each event with 100% of the funds raised going directly towards breast cancer research. Fans are encouraged to wear pink along with the traditional Lion gold and blue, with free breast cancer awareness t-shirts handed out at each pink event.
