Lions Drop 68-63 Decision in Overtime to Northeastern State

A 3-point play by Jason Jones and a 3 pointer by Ben Rovenstine down the stretch of overtime led visiting Northeastern State to a 68-63 win over host Texas A&M University-Commerce on Saturday afternoon at the A&M-Commerce Field House.

Northeastern State rallied from a 13-point deficit, 53-40, in the second half with a 16-2 run to take a 56-55 lead with 1:59 to go. Following the run, the two teams managed to exchange baskets, including back-to-back 3 pointers by Brad Hambrick of A&M-Commerce and Marlon Burnett of NSU with the shot clock winding down as overtime was needed to settle the outcome.

In the extra period, the RiverHawks scored five of the first seven points – including the decisive 3-point play - to build a 64-61 lead with 2:19 to go. The Lions managed to cut it to one on a Ronnie Morgan lay up but Rovenstine hit a 3 pointer to seal the fate for A&M-Commerce.

Texas A&M-Commerce (9-8, 0-2 LSC North) was led in scoring by DeUndrae Spraggins, who scored 16 and Sammy Jackson and Ronnie Morgan each added 10 in the defeat.

Northeastern State (6-11, 1-1 LSC North) got a double double from Jason Jones, who scored 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Ricky Branham and Aaron Arango scored 13 and 12 points, respectively and 11 more from Burnett off the bench.

The Lions will be away from home for its next two contests including trips to Cameron (Jan. 24) and East Central (Jan. 28).
