Five Lions score in double figures to beat ACU, 87-73
Sammy Jackson and Deundrae Spraggins each recorded 16 points, and Cardell Hunter added a double-double to lead the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions past the Abilene Christian Wildcats, 87-73, on Saturday evening at Moody Coliseum.
A&M-Commerce has now reeled off a season-high three straight wins to improve to 7-5, while ACU falls to 6-5. Lions' head basketball coach Sam Walker raises his career wins to 135 in nine seasons, which takes him to third all-time in the program's history.
After falling behind 3-2 early, Brad Hambrick sank a jumper that gave the Lions a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the game. A&M-Commerce continued to build the advantage throughout the half, and took a 45-34 lead into the break after a P.J. Colley dunk.
The second half was much of the same as the Lions extended their lead to as much 19 on five occasions. ACU closed the game on a 5-0 run to get within 14.
Hunter was the only player with a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds for A&M-Commerce. Ronnie Morgan tallied 15 points and Rashad Brown added 13 off the bench.
Dejan Sencanski topped the Wildcats with 18 points and Cameron Holson followed with 13. Marko Nikolic grabbed eight rebounds.
The Lions return to action on Monday at 8 p.m. against Angelo State in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena in San Angelo.
