Lions Fall to St. Edward's on Last-Second Lay Up


Taylor Mullenax hit a lay up with a 3.4 seconds left to lead host St. Edward’s to a 65-63 win over Texas A&M University-Commerce in the season opener at the Recreation and Convocation Center in Austin.

A&M-Commerce (0-1) tied the game at 63 with 27 seconds left when junior Cardell Hunter hit a three pointer before the game winning lay up.

St. Edward’s (1-0) had three players in double figures including Mullenax with 15 points. Ryan Shanks and Kyle Wakefield, who added 16 and 12 points, respectively, joined him in double figures.

Lions’ senior DeUndrae Spraggins scored a team-high 18 points in the loss in his A&M-Commerce debut. Hunter, who added 10, joined him in double figures and a team-high nine rebounds.

Mullenax put the Hilltoppers ahead 46-35 with 12:13 left in the game until the Lions went on a 10-0 run to get within one, 46-45 with 8:52 remaining.

A&M-Commerce took its second lead of the game when freshman Brad Hambrick hit a 3 pointer with 5:24 left to put the Lions in front 53-52. St. Edward’s regained the lead on a three pointer with 4:01 remaining for a 57-55 advantage and never trailed again for the remainder of the contest.

The Lions return to the Recreation and Convocation Center in Austin for the final day of the SEU Shootout at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday in Austin against Texas A&M-International. TAMIU posted a 74-63 win over Ouachita Baptist on Saturday.
