A&M-Commerce Drops 86-80 Decision to Host Northeastern State
Northeastern State started the second half on a 16-4 run en route to an 86-80 win over Texas A&M University-Commerce in men's basketball action on Wednesday night in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
After opening half that featured eight lead changes and five ties, the RiverHawks hit a 3 pointer on four of its first six possessions to build a game-high 19-point lead, 52-33 with 16:04 left.
Northeastern State remained in front for the remainder of the contest. However, the Lions ended the game on an 11-4 run for the final margin.
All five starters for Northeastern State scored in double figures in the win. The RiverHawks hit a season-high 13 3 pointers and were led by Dominique Gaines, who scored a game-high 22. Jason Jones hit four 3 pointers, Antoine Branch, Marlon Burnett and Gaines each knocked down three 3 pointers.
A&M-Commerce put four players in double figures in the loss. Cardell Hunter and Ronnie Morgan each had 16 to lead the Lions. Preston Whitley and Brian Singleton had 14 and 12 points, respectively. Singleton also shared in game-high honors with six assists.
In the opening half, the Lions had built a six-point lead, 22-16 when Singleton hit his first of three 3 pointers with 8:33 left.
Northeastern State answered with an outside game of its own, hitting five 3 pointers to close out the half to build a 36-31 halftime lead.
The home team has
now won the last five games in the series, as the two teams will
have a rematch on Saturday at 4 pm at The Field House.
