A&M-Commerce Falls to Northeastern State, 72-65
Following the third tie of the game,
43-43 with 10:43 left in the contest, Northeastern State scored the
next seven points en route to a 72-65 win over host Texas A&M
University-Commerce in men’s basketball action on Saturday
afternoon.
Texas A&M University-Commerce (15-7, 4-3 LSC North) junior
Brian Singleton (pictured) had a
team-high 19 points and freshman Preston Whitley
added 12.
Northeastern State (15-7, 6-1 LSC North) got a game-high 22 points
from Dominique Gaines and team-high eight rebounds. He was joined
in double figures by Marlon Burnett and Antoine Branch, who scored
21 and 11 points, respectively.
With 6:26 left in the first half, Singleton made the first of two
free throws to tie the game at 20. On the ensuing possession,
Branch hit one of his three 3-pointers to put the RiverHawks ahead
for the remainder of the first half.
To start the second half, A&M-Commerce went on a 11-4 run to
take a 40-39 advantage. The game remained close until Burnett hit a
lay up with 10:30 to go that put NSU ahead for the remainder of the
game.
The Lions refused to concede as they found themselves behind by
10, 67-57 with 1:27 to go, the Lions scored six unanswered to cut
the deficit to four with 28 seconds to go. Northeastern State
managed to make five of six free throws for the win.
A&M-Commerce will return to the road for its next game when
they face East Central on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Ada, Oklahoma.
