Lions Win Second Straight
Four Lions scored in double digits and a 9-2 run to close out the game led host Texas A&M University-Commerce to a 79-67 win over Abilene Christian on Saturday afternoon at the A&M-Commerce Field House.
The Lions had four in double digits for the second time as junior Brian Singleton (pictured) had his second straight 21-point effort to lead all scorers. He also had six rebounds and four assists in the win. Singleton was joined in double digits by sophomore Brad Hambrick, who had 14 points, senior Sammy Jackson added 13 and senior Ronnie Morgan recorded his second double double of the season, with 11 points and 12 rebounds. With the win, A&M-Commerce improves to 7-1 on the season.
Abilene Christian (4-3) had three in double digits including Eddie Thompson, who had 19 on the strength of four 3 pointers. He was joined by Abby Kabba and Giordan White, who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
After the second tie of the contest at 22 with 7:31 left in the opening half, the Lions scored the next six points and led for the remainder of the first 20 minutes.
A&M-Commerce capitalized on five ACU turnovers for nine points and hit 48.3% of their shots for a 37-31 halftime lead.
The Wildcats scored eight of the first 10 points to start the second half to tie the game at 39. After a timeout by A&M-Commerce veteran head coach Sam Walker, the Lions got a layup by Singleton and a three pointer by senior Cardell Hunter for a five-point lead, 44-39, with 15:35 to go. ACU retaliated and managed to tie the game for the fourth and final time at 49 when Thompson hit his second three pointer of the half.
A&M-Commerce had an answer as they were able to get a three-point play by Preston Whitley that put the Lions ahead for the remainder of the contest.
The Lions have now won 10 of its last 11 games at the friendly confines of the A&M-Commerce Field House. A&M-Commerce will play again next in 48 hours as they take on Angelo State at 8 p.m.
