COMMERCE, Texas – A&M-Commerce senior forward Jason Smith has been named the Lone Star Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week, announced today by league officials. It is the first weekly honor of Smith's career as he shares the accolade with West Texas A&M's Kennon Washington.
Smith played a key role in helping A&M-Commerce to a pair of Lone Star Conference victories last week, averaging 18.0 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting 80.0 percent from the floor and 85.7 percent from the free throw line. In the victory at Abilene Christian, Smith recorded 17 points with five rebounds and three assists, hitting five-of-seven shots from the floor and seven-of-eight from the free throw line.
Smith then had his best game in an A&M-Commerce uniform, recording his first career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in the 75-58 win over Angelo State. The senior from Fort Worth hit seven-of-eight shots from the floor for the Lions and hit five-of-six from the charity stripe, recording a team-high six assists with a pair of steals in 19 minutes.
On the season, Smith is averaging 10.3 points and 5.1 rebounds for the Lions, averaging just under 25 minutes per game. He has established himself among the LSC leaders, ranking fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (62.7%) and 10th in assists per game (3.7) and assist/turnover ratio (1.4).
Smith and the rest of the Lions look to build on their five-game winning streak as they embark on a three-game road trip, beginning this Saturday when the Lions take on Dallas Baptist at 2 p.m. A&M-Commerce then visits Ouachita Baptist and Southern Arkansas next week before getting two weeks off for the Christmas holiday.
