Pair of Lions Earn LSC North Division Player of the Week Recognition

Texas A&M University-Commerce senior linebacker Andrew Gamboa and junior kicker Juan Velasco were named Lone Star Conference North Division Defense and Special Teams Player of the Week on  Monday.

Both played an integral part of a Lions' 13-10 win over LSC South Division member, Angelo State on Saturday. A&M-Commerce was the only LSC North team to win in the six crossover games on Saturday.

Gamboa led a Lions defense with 17 tackles against Angelo State in holding the Rams to 219 yards of total offense. The 17 tackles by Gamboa are the most since a 17-tackle effort by Darvin Peterson at Central Oklahoma (Sept. 30, 2006). Velasco made two field goals that put the Lions in front 6-0
early in the game. He also got off a 46-yard punt on the Lions’ final possession that pinned the Rams at their own 38-yard line.

It is the first weekly honors for both Gamboa and Velasco and the Lions have had 23 recipients since the hiring of head coach Scotty Conley prior to the 2004 season.

A&M-Commerce returns to action on Saturday, September 13th at 6:00 p.m. when they face No. 6 Abilene Christian at Shotwell Stadium. All the action can be heard live on KETR (88.9 FM) and www.ketr.org.
