MORRISS, TERRELL REPRESENT LIONS AT 2012 LSC FOOTBALL MEDIA DAY

Remarks from Head Coach Guy Morriss (VIDEO)

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The 2012 football season officially kicked off this afternoon as the Lone Star Conference hosted its annual Media Day at the Airport Holiday Inn in San Antonio. Representatives from all nine football playing schools were in attendance, with head coach Guy Morriss and senior defensive back Marlin Terrell representing A&M-Commerce.

The day opened with a welcome from LSC Commissioner Stan Wagnon, followed by the release of the preseason polls. The Lions were picked ninth with 39 points, four shy of eighth-place Eastern New Mexico. Reigning champion Midwestern State was picked first with 215 points, including 19 of the 25 first-place votes, followed by Abilene Christian, West Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Kingsville.

"We always talk about its not where you start but where you finish, and that certainly will be true this year," said Morriss. "I'm still reeling from last season. I know our players have moved on and are looking forward, but it's still something that is eating at me, and something I'm eager to change."

Upon reflecting on the preseason poll, Morriss commented, "we're picked last right now, but I don't think we'll finish the season there.  If we can stay healthy, we'll be tough to beat."

Terrell also commented on the preseason rankings for the Lions, knowing full well they have a tough road ahead. "As a player, it makes me feel disrespected, but I know its up to us to change that. We've had a great offseason and we've been working hard to change what happened last year, and I think we're going to surprise some people.  We'll be sure to paste the preseason poll all over the locker room."

The preseason polls for the rest of the fall sports were also announced as A&M-Commerce soccer highlighted the bunch, picked to finish third with one first place vote. Volleyball was picked ninth with men's cross country checking in at third and women's cross country settling in at ninth.

We are just around the corner from the start of the 2012-13 season as football, volleyball and soccer players start reporting to campus within the next two weeks.  Keep tuned to LionAthletics.com throughout the month of August as we get ready for the upcoming Lion season, which kicks off Saturday, September 1 when the Lions host Southeastern Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
