LIONS STRUGGLE IN OPENING ROUND OF CHARLES COODY WEST TEXAS INTERCOLLEGIATE

ABILENE, Texas -- Texas A&M University-Commerce opened up its 2011 fall schedule at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate in Abilene and struggled in its opening round of the season. The Lions currently sit 14th out of the 14 schools competing, trailing 13th-place Harding by 12 strokes after 18 holes.

Patrick Russo was the top Lion finisher on the day against the tough 14 team field, posting a 6-over 77 on the afternoon, paced by a 3-over 38 over round one. Russo is tied for 59th overall and leads teammate Chris Leasor by two strokes after his 8-over 79.

Freshman Jarret Martin posted a 10-over 81 in his first collegiate round, including a 3-over 39 over the final nine holes. He tied with John Moug, who matched his 10-over 81 through round one. Freshman Derek Rucki rounded out the Lion scorecard, posting a 13-over 84 in his first collegiate tournament.

Host Abilene Christian holds the first round lead with a 5-under 279, two strokes better than Central Oklahoma (3-under 281). Midwestern State (1-over 285) currently sits in third place with fellow Lone Star Conference opponents Cameron and West Texas A&M tied for fourth with a 3-over 287.

The Lions try to climb up the standings Tuesday as the final round of the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate gets underway at 8 a.m.
