ARDMORE, Okla. – A&M-Commerce returned to the links Monday, competing in the 2011 Dornick Hills Classic at the Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla. The Lions post a two-round total of 66-over 626 and sits 12th out of the 13 team field heading into Tuesday's final round.
The Lions opened up the tournament with a 35-over 315 in round one, paced by freshman Kyle Middleton's 8-over 78. A&M-Commerce responded by shaving four strokes off their score in round two, posting a 31-over 311 in round two. Freshman Jarret Martin was the top performer for the Lions in round two, posting A&M-Commerce's best round of the day with a 6-over 76.
Martin sits atop the Lion scorecard after the opening two rounds with a 15-over 155. He heads a logjam of A&M-Commerce who all are within a handful of shots of each other. Patrick Russo is one stroke back, shooting a 16-over 156 through the first 36 holes, with Chris Leasor two shots behind with a 17-over 157.
Freshmen Marcus Sanna and Middleton round out the A&M-Commerce scorecard after the duo each posted a 20-over 160 in their first collegiate tournaments. Sanna shot a 79 in round one, followed by an 81 with Middleton posting a 78 and 82 through is first 36 holes.
A&M-Commerce holds a four-stroke advantage on 13th place Murray State (70-over 630) and has its work cut out for it if it wants to climb the standings. The Lions enter Tuesday's final round 10 shots back of 11th-place East Central (56-over 616) and 12 strokes behind ninth-place Southeastern Oklahoma and Cameron J.V. (54-over 614).
Central Oklahoma holds the lead after the opening two rounds, shooting a 19-over 579 and entering the final round with an eight shot advantage on Abilene Christian (27-over 587). St. Edward's (31-over 591), Midwestern State (37-over 597) and Arkansas Fort-Smith (40-over 600) round out the top-five.
The final round gets underway Tuesday morning with the Lions looking to move up the leaderboard. Final result will be posted when they become available at LionAthletics.com.
