DALLAS – A&M-Commerce sophomore Patrick Russo wrapped up his impressive performance at the 2012 Dallas Baptist Classic, closing out round three with an even-par 70 to compile a three-round score of 2-under 208, tying for fourth in the individual standings.
A&M-Commerce, which began the day in 15th out of 18 teams, posted a 24-over 304, moving up one spot to close out the tournament with a 46-over 886. The Lions closed out competition at the Golf Club of Dallas tied with Henderson State, seven shots ahead of 16 th-place Southeastern Oklahoma State (53-over 893).
One day after shooting a career-low 4-under 66, Russo continued to make shots when it counted, closing out the final round with an even-par 70. The 2-under 208 marks Russo's lowest 54-hole total of his A&M-Commerce career, posting the third top-10 finish of his career. He joined six other golfers in a tie for fourth as they finished one shot back of the tournament individual leaders.
Freshman Marcus Sanna placed second on the Lion scorecard with a 6-over 76 over the final round, closing out the Dallas Baptist Classic with a 12-over 222, tying for 51st overall. He finished four strokes better than fellow freshman Derek Rucki, who closed out the tournament with a 16-over 226. Brett Bradshaw (23-over 233) and John Moug (27-over 237) rounded out the A&M-Commerce scorecard.
A&M-Commerce settled into its final position, finishing 12 shots back of Lone Star Conference opponent Incarnate Word (34-over 874) and 14 strokes behind host Dallas Baptist (32-over 872). The Lions were 20 shots behind both Arkansas-Fort Smith and Midwestern State (26-over 866) in missing a top-10 team finish.
Texas Wesley put together a dominating 2-over 282 over the final 18 holes, running away with the Dallas Baptist Classic with a 5-under 835 and besting second-place Lubbock Christian (8-over 848) by 13 strokes. Oklahoma Christian and St. Edward's (9-over 849) tied for third in the team standings with LSC rival Abilene Christian (12-over 852) rounding out the top-five.
There was a three-way tie for the individual title, with Dallas Baptist's Brandon Johnson, Texas Wesleyan's Nathan Anderson and Santiago Quintero of St. Edwards finishing with a 3-under 207, one shot better than Russo and the five other golfers sitting at 2-under 208.
With the Dallas Baptist Classic in its rearview mirror, A&M-Commerce now prepares for the Lone Star Conference Championships, which will be held Monday, April 16 through Tuesday, April 17 at Trophy Club, Texas. The 54-hole tournament gets underway with two rounds being played on Monday, followed by the 18-hole final round on Tuesday. Full results will be posted as they become available at LionAthletics.com.
