A&M-COMMERCE CLOSES OUT LSC CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH FIFTH-PLACE SHOWING

TROPHY CLUB, Texas – A&M-Commerce closed out the final round of the 2012 Firestone Lone Star Conference Championships right where it started, placing fifth in the final event of the 2011-12 season. The Lions posted a 13-over 301 over the final 18 holes, closing out the 54-hole tournament with a 30-over 894.

A&M-Commerce was led individually by freshman Marcus Sanna, who used a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish tied for 13th with a 5-over 221 in his first LSC Championship. He was one of three A&M-Commerce golfers to finish among the top-20, finishing three shots better than fellow freshman Kyle Middleton, who notched a 17th-place finish with an 8-over 224. Freshman Cade Grimm also logged a top-20 showing, tying for 18th with a 9-over 225.

Sophomore Patrick Russo posted a 3-over 75 over the final 18 holes, finishing in sole possession of 23rd place with a 12-over 228. Freshman Jarret Martin rounded out the A&M-Commerce scorecard, placing 29th overall with a 25-over 241.

The Lions entered the day in fifth place and settled comfortably into that slotST with the 301, ending the 2012 LSC Championships 10 strokes back of West Texas A&M (20-over 884). A&M-Commerce finished well ahead of sixth-place Incarnate Word (50-over 914), besting the Cardinals by 20 strokes.

Cameron held off Abilene Christian to capture the team championship, shooting a 1-under 863 and holding off the Wildcats by four strokes as ACU notches a 3-over 867. Midwestern State placed third with a 9-over 873. The Wildcats' Alex Carpenter captured the individual title, shooting a 3-under 213, defeating West Texas A&M's Ben Hargis (2-under 214) by one shot.

The LSC Championship closes out the 2011-12 season for A&M-Commerce as the Lions recorded five top-10 finishes on the year, highlighted by a runner-up showing at the California Baptist Spring Break Collegiate. A&M-Commerce's roster now looks ahead to the future as the sophomore and freshman-laden team accounted for four top-10 and seven additional top-20 finishes on the year.
