AMARILLO, Texas – Behind an even-par 142 by C.J. Clem, A&M-Commerce posted a 15-over 583 through the first two rounds of the Ryan Palmer Invitational, good enough to sit ninth out of 17 teams.
Playing in its fourth tournament in four weeks, A&M-Commerce opened up the 54-hole tournament with a 10-over 294 in round one, settling for a tie for eighth-place after the opening 18 holes. The Lions turned around and shaved five strokes off their round two total, shooting a 5-over 289, but still slid back one spot following low rounds from a number of teams as well.
Low scores were the story of the day Monday as Clem currently sits tied for 11th overall with the even-par 142, despite shooting a 2-under 69 in round two to set a new personal-low. He leads teammate Patrick Russo by two shots after Russo rebounded from a 5-over 76 to post a season-best 3-under 68 in round two, sitting tied for 20th with a 2-over 144.
Kason Childress registered a 3-over 145 over the opening two rounds and is tied for 25th overall, sitting third on the A&M-Commerce scorecard. Cade Grimm shot a 12-over 154 with Seth Maxwell posting a 16-over 158 through the opening 36 holes.
A&M-Commerce enters Tuesday's final round seeking its second top-five finish of the year, but will have a bit of work to do. The Lions are three shots back of both Cameron and Midwestern State (12-over 580), who are tied for seventh, seven strokes behind sixth-place Colorado Springs (8-over 576) and eight shots back of fifth-place Abilene Christian (7-over 575).
Colorado State-Pueblo is the leader in the clubhouse after the opening two rounds, posting a 1-over 569 but holding a slim one-shot advantage over both St. Mary's and St. Edward's (2-over 570) with 18 holes left to play. Colorado School of Mines (4-over 572) also remains in the hunt, leading the fifth-place Wildcats by three shots.
Tuesday's final round gets underway at 9 a.m. at Tascosa Country Club as A&M-Commerce will be teamed up with Lone Star Conference rivals Cameron and Midwestern State in the final round pairings. Results will be posted at LionAthletics.com as they become available.
