SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- A&M-Commerce closed out the final 18 holes of the 2012 Bruce Williams Invitational with a 22-over 310, finishing 10th out of 12 teams. The Lions posted a three-round total of 56-over 920, notching their fourth top-10 team showing of the season.
Beginning the day tied for eighth overall, A&M-Commerce found itself in a battle with Lone Star Conference rival Incarnate Word, who used an 18-over 306 over the final round to slip past A&M-Commerce with a 55-over 919, besting the Lions by one stroke for ninth-place. Binghamton (46-over 910) finished eighth while Arkansas-Fort Smith, the team the Lions were tied with in eighth heading into the round, shot a 9-over 297 to finish in seventh-place with a 43-over 907.
Once again, junior C.J. Clem paced A&M-Commerce, finishing tied for 18th overall with an 8-over 224. Sophomore Marcus Sanna, competing in his first event of the season, came on strong over the final 18 holes, notching a team-best 2-over 74 to move into second among Lion finishers with a 12-over 228, tying for 32nd overall.
Fellow sophomore Cade Grimm was one shot back of Sanna, posting a 13-over 229 to tie for 35th individually. Seth Maxwell (25-over 241) and Patrick Russo (34-over 250) rounded out the A&M-Commerce scorecard.
Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian ran away with the team title, posting a three-round total of 13-under 851 and defeating both Cameron and Incarnate Word (20-over 884) by 33 strokes to finish first. Host St. Mary's (27-over 891) placed fourth with Southeastern Oklahoma State (32-over 896) rounding out the top-five.
A&M-Commerce now sets its sights on its first home tournament of the season as the Lions will host the Classic at the Tribute on November 5 and 6. It marks the second year of the tournament out at the Tribute Golf Club in The Colony and marks the end of the fall schedule for A&M-Commerce.
