THE COLONY, Texas – A&M-Commerce wrapped up the fall portion of its 2012-13 schedule with a strong showing, notching a 1-under 287 over the final 18 holes of its host tournament. The Lions posted a 2-over 578 over 36 holes, tying for fourth overall at the Classic at the Tribute at the Tribute Golf Club.
A&M-Commerce, which began the day in sole possession of fourth place, held its own and scratched four strokes off its opening round 3-over 291, tying with McMurry for fourth and finishing just two shots back of third-place Cameron (even-par 576).
Individually, Tuesday's final round was led by a 3-under 69 from C.J. Clem, finishing with a 2-under 142 and tying for seventh overall with teammate Marcus Sanna, who logged a 1-over 73 following his 3-under 69 in round one. Cade Grimm finished third with a 4-over 148, tying for 28th overall.
Freshman Kason Childress notched the second-lowest round of the day for A&M-Commerce, logging a 1-under 71 to finish the 36-hole tournament with a 5-over 149. Patrick Russo rounded out the Lion "A" team, shaving six strokes off his opening round total to card a 2-over 74, finishing with a 10-over 154.
The A&M-Commerce "B" team remained in 13th-place overall but rebounded from a shaky performance in round one, improving by 16 strokes to finish with a 54-over 630. Kyle Middleton headlined the "B" squad, shooting an even-par 72 to finish with a 12-over 156, one shot better than Brett Bradshaw's 13-over 157. Seth Maxwell (15-over 159), John Moug (17-over 161) and Brent Reagan (18-over 162) rounded out the scoring for the Lion "B" team.
Newman ran away with the team title, logging an impressive 15-under 273 in round two and finishing with a 36-hole total of 14-under 562, defeating second-place Midwestern State (1-under 575) by 13 shots. Cameron, the Lions and McMurry rounded out the top five of the team standings, giving A&M-Commerce its fourth top-10 finish of the fall season and second top-five showing.
With the fall tournament now behind it, A&M-Commerce will get a little bit of a break for the winter months before returning to action in February. The Lions will host the annual Texoma Chevy Dealers Crawford Wade Invitational at Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro, Texas, February 25 and 26, 2013.
