POTTSBORO, Texas – Led by a pair of freshmen, A&M-Commerce had another solid round at Tanglewood, finishing third out of 15 teams at the 2013 Texoma Chevy Dealers Crawford Wade Invitational. The Lions posted a 13-over 301 over the final round to card a 25-over 601 for the tournament, finishing one stroke back of second.
Freshman Kason Childress emerged as the leader for the Lions over the final round, carding an even-par 72 over the final 18 holes, tying for the lowest score of the day, to finish tied for fifth with a 3-over 147 and being named to the All-Tournament team. Fellow freshman Seth Maxwell notched a 2-over 74 over the final round, finishing with a 9-over 153 and tying for 22nd overall, just shy of a top-20 finish.
Cade Grimm and C.J. Clem finished among the top-20 as the duo tied for 13th individually with a 7-over 151. Grimm shot a 77 over the final 18 holes with Clem posting a 79. Marcus Sanna rounded out the Lions' "A" team with a 14-over 158, posting a 78 on his home course over the final round.
A&M-Commerce's "B" team notched a 14th-place finish with an 85-over 661, including a 43-over 331 in round two. Kyle Middleton was the top finisher posting a 16-over 160, four shots better than Brent Reagan's 20-over 164. Jarret Martin (21-over 165), John Moug (29-over 173) and Yogi Gallegos (35-over 179) rounded out the scoring for the Lions.
While the rain was nowhere to be found, it was a windy and cold day at Pottsboro as the strong gusts wrecked havoc for a handful of teams. By the end, the sun had broken through and temperatures began to rise as scores began to lower as well.
St. Mary's captured the team title with a 13-over 589, finishing 11 shots better than second-place Arkansas-Fort Smith (24-over 600) and 12 strokes ahead of the host Lions (25-over 601). Two strokes separated the second three teams as Harding placed fourth with a 26-over 602 while Paris Junior College (31-over 607) rounded out the top-five, edging out Fort Lewis College (32-over 608).
The Rattlers' Matthew Van Winkle captured the individual championship with a 2-under 142, and he was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammate Kirby Gorzell, Arkansas Fort-Smith's Tyler Reynolds, Henderson State's Joseph Hausberger and Childress.
Up next for the Lions is a trip to Wichita Falls, competing in the Midwestern State Mustang Invitational March 18-19 at the Champions Course at Weeks Park.
