Agapius Amo Selected for Induction into the USTFCCCA Division II Track and Field Hall of Fame
Former Texas A&M University-Commerce track and field and cross country standout Agapius Amo was one of six selected on Wednesday for induction into the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association Division Two Track and Field Hall of Fame.
He will be inducted along with Gregory Roberts of Morehouse College, Curry Dawson, Eric Cole and Amber Miller of Angelo State and Tongula (Givens) Steddum of Missouri Southern.
All six will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in a special banquet during the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in San Angelo, Texas on the campus of Angelo State University on May 20th.
Amo was
inducted into the A&M-Commerce Athletic Hall of Fame on
November 3, 2008. As a member of the Lions' track and field team,
Amo set the school and LSC record in the 10,000-meter record in
1986. He earned the Cap Shelton Award at the 1986 Lone Star
Conference Track and Field Championships after winning the 5,000
and 10,000-meter run as well as the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He
went on to win the national title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase
and the 10,000-meter run. Throughout his career, he was a six-time
All-American and two-time national title. In 1985, he led the Lions
to a second-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field
Championships. He represented his home country of Tanzania in the
1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and was the runner up in the
10,000-meter run at the World University Games in Canada. After his
running days, he went on to coach distance runners at Nicholls
State.
