Leslie White Records NCAA Provisional Mark in Javelin at Lion Quadrangular to Begin Season

Texas A&M University-Commerce senior Leslie White recorded a NCAA provisional throw in the javelin and won the high jump competition on Saturday at the season opening Lion Quadrangular.

White, a senior from Emory, nearly qualified for the NCAA Championships last year in the high jump began his senior campaign with a career-best winning throw of 202-9 in the javelin. He also was victorious in the high jump with a clearance of 6-6.

White and the field that included Southern Arkansas, Tarleton State and University of Texas-Tyler started their season in windy conditions at Memorial Stadium. The wind got up to as much as 30 miles an hour on the day. It was the first home regular season meet hosted by A&M-Commerce since the Delmar Brown Invitational on March 8, 2003.

Another double winner for the Lions in the season opener was senior Lyndon Wyse in the long jump (21-2 ½) and in the triple jump (47-1 ½).

Sophomore Brandon Womack led the Lions to a 1-2 finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:57); in addition, he finished second in the 800-meter run (2:05.39). Behind Womack in the 3,000-meter steeplechase was junior Gerardo Delafuente in a time of 10:25.

Senior La’Shara Jefferson led A&M-Commerce to a sweep of the top three places in the discus with a throw of 118-6. Sophomores Megan Davis and Erica Anderson were second (110-11) and third (110-2), respectively.

Senior Jeff Rayome won the shot put (50-5), fourth in the discus (115-11) and hammer throw (116-5).

Randahl Hickman was second in the 100-meter dash (12.53) and senior Leonard Jackson was third in the 200-meter dash (22.84).  Behind Wyse in the long jump was teammate Marquis Stimpson with a jump of 20-8 ½ and in the triple jump was freshman Kyle Weaver in 44-8 ½.

Newcomers Desmond Randle was second in the 400-meter dash (52.58), Porsha Young was third in the 200-meter dash (27.81) and fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:03.97) and freshman Cody Hughes was third in the 5,000-meter run (15:37.52).

Dena Hawkins and Desiree Spencer won the long jump and triple jump, respectively. Hawkins won the long jump with a leap of 16-2 ¼ and Spencer was second; meanwhile, on the triple jump, it was the other way around with Spencer winning with a jump of 35-3 ½ and Hawkins in second with a jump of 32-11.

Coming over from the football team, Cody Bolton and Chad Washington were third (11.10) and fourth (11.14), respectively in the 100-meter dash.

The Lions’ men's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams both finished second.

The next meet for the Lions is the Tarleton State Invitational, Thursday, March 5th in Stephenville.
