Three More Lions Record NCAA Provisional Marks
The Texas A&M University-Commerce track and field team had three performers turn in NCAA provisional marks on Thursday at the Tarleton State Invitational.
The competition for the Lions featured four other schools from the Lone Star Conference including Abilene Christian, Angelo State, Midwestern State, West Texas A&M and host Tarleton State as well as McMurray, University of Dallas, Hardin Simmons and Dallas Baptist.
A&M-Commerce junior La’Shara Jefferson recorded a NCAA provisional mark in the discus with a throw of 142-9 en route to a fourth-place finish overall. The Lancaster, Texas native also set a career-best in the shot put (41-7 ¼) with a third-place finish.
Seniors Jeff Rayome and Lyndon Wyse in the shot put and in the triple jump, respectively posted NCAA provisional marks.
Rayome set a career best in the shot put with a victorious throw of 52-8 ¼ and Wyse was a double winner, winning the triple jump (47-11 ¼) and the long jump (22-2 ¼).
On the women’s side, three Lions recorded fourth-place finishes, including Leslea Traylor in the 400-meter hurdles (1:14.33) and Sunny Henderson in the javelin (121-9) that set season-best marks. Sophomore Dena Hawkins was fourth in the triple jump (33-0 ½).
Makesha Brewer set a season-best in the 400-meter dash (1:02.00) and three more Lions picked up sixth-place finishes, including Brewer in the 200-meter dash (26.56), Randahl Hickman in the 100-meter dash (12.90) and Taylor Smith in the shot put (36-0 ¼).
On the men’s side, sophomore Brandon Womack won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:06.66) and senior Brad Dotson was second in the 400-meter dash in a season-best time of 49.58.
Senior Leslie White shared second-place honors in the high jump with a clearance of 6-4. Also, in the high jump, Josh Conder and Kyle Weaver were fifth and sixth, respectively.
Freshman Cody Hughes was third in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:43.70 and Cairo Thornton and Desmond Randle shared sixth-place honors with each posting a time of 51.16. In the javelin, White was sixth with a throw of 158-6 and junior Anthony Valle set a season-best with a throw of 139-3.
In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Demetrius Holmes and sophomore Preston Duncan recorded season-best times. Holmes crossed the line in 1:00.07 en route to a seventh-place finish and Duncan was ninth in 1:01.97.
The Lions’ 4x100 (43.10) and 4x400-meter (3:19.65) relay teams each posted second-place finishes behind conference member Angelo State.
Next on the schedule for A&M-Commerce is
a trip to the York Relays, hosted by Sam Houston State on Wednesday
and Thursday, March 11-12 in Huntsville, Texas.
