Lions Win Five Events at McMurry Relays
The Texas A&M University-Commerce men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Abilene for the McMurry Relays on Thursday.
The Lions crowned five champions and five more posted runner up honors. Junior Sunny Henderson posted a NCAA provisional mark in the javelin with a career-best throw of 138-1. The mark by Henderson is currently the eighth best in the nation.
Junior La'Shara Jefferson won the discus with a season-best and NCAA provisional mark with a throw of 150-1. The toss is the fifth-best throw in the nation. Teammate sophomore Erica Anderson was eighth with a season-best toss of 117-11.
Senior Leslie White recorded a NCAA provisional mark with a clearance of 6-7 1/2 to win the high jump and fellow senior Josh Conder was fifth with a clearance of 6-3 1/2.
Freshman Desiree Spencer led a one-two finish for A&M-Commerce in the triple jump with a leap of 34-4 1/2. Teammate Dena Hawkins was second with a jump of 32-6 1/4. Spencer was third in the long jump with a leap of 16-8 1/2.
Senior Lyndon Wyse led three Lions in the top 10 in the triple jump with a victorious jump of 47-11 1/2. In addition, freshman Kyle Weaver was second (44-10 1/4) and sophomore Marquis Stimpson was eighth (41-0 1/4), setting season-best marks in the process.
Wyse set a season-best mark in the long jump with his leap of 21-1 1/4 en route to a 10th-place finish and Weaver was ninth with a jump of 21-3 1/4.
In the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Brandon Womack finished second (4:11.84) as all five A&M-Commerce runners posted season-best performances. Junior Gerardo Delafuente was sixth (4:18.35), freshman Cody Hughes was eighth (4:18.56), senior Logan Kelly was 12th (4:25.16) and freshman Ray Moreno was 27th (4:50.37). Senior Leslea Traylor was second in the 400-meter hurdles in a season-best time of 1:12.73 and senior Jeff Rayome finished second in the shot put with a throw of 50-10 1/4.
In the 200-meter dash, Brad Dotson was third (22.11) and Leonard Jackson was fifth (22.37). Senior Dean Laing was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.70).
Makesha Brewer was third in the 400-meter dash in a season-best time of 1:02.11. The Lions' got a pair of fourth-place finishes from sophomore Kate Donovan in the 1,500-meter run (5:21.69) and Taylor Smith in the hammer throw (96-7).
Next for five members of the team including junior Cody Bolton and senior Chad Washington in the 100-meter dash, senior Leslie White in the javelin, junior Sunny Henderson in the 100-meter hurdles and junior La'Shara Jefferson in the discus will be the Texas Relays on Friday.
