Lions Set 14 Season-Best Marks at Michael Johnson Invitational
The Texas A&M University-Commerce men's and women's track and field team set 14 season-best marks on Saturday at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco.
On the men's side, freshman Cody Hughes won the 5,000-meter run collegiate/open division in a season-best time of 14:55.06 for a five-second victory over three Tarleton State runners. Joining Hughes with season-best marks in the 5,000-meter run were teammates Gerardo Delafuente (16:02.29) and Logan Kelly (16:31.93).
Two of the marks came from junior Cairo Thornton (pictured), who set a pair of season-best and career-best marks in the 200-meter dash (22.73) and in the 400-meter dash (49.76). The Lions also had three other performers Brad Dotson (49.34), Albert Sinegal (50.55) and Colby Oberle (51.90) set season-best marks in the 400-meter dash.
Sophomore Brandon Womack was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 9:44.02. Anthony Tosie also had a season-best performance in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 24.72. Reigning LSC Co-Field Athlete of the Week senior Lyndon Wyse matched a season-best with a jump of 22-9 3/4 in the long jump.
On the women's side, senior Leslea Traylor in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.39) and sophomore Makesha Brewer in the 400-meter dash (1:00.78) posted season-best times. In the 200-meter dash, freshman Khadijah Campbell clocked a season-best time of 28.70.
Junior Sunny Henderson was second in the javelin with a NCAA-provisional mark throw of 137-11, just missing a season-best by two inches. Teammate La'Shara Jefferson was third in the discus with a NCAA-provisional mark throw of 147-11.
The next meet for the Lions is
the Mean Green Twilight on Thursday, April 30th at the University
of North Texas in Denton.
