Lions Continue Preparations for LSC Championships
At the 2009 Mean Green Twilight, hosted by North Texas, senior Jeff Rayome (pictured) won the shot put (51-5 ¾) and junior Sunny Henderson won the javelin (116-10) to lead the Texas A&M University-Commerce track and field team.
Freshman Cody Hughes was second in the 3,000-meter run (8:49.60), just two seconds behind individual champion - Louie Tijerina of TCU. Both Tijerina (8:47.62) and Hughes eclipsed the four-year old record of 8:54.75 at Fouts Field in Denton. Teammates Gerardo Delafuente and Logan Kelly were fifth (9:11.52) and ninth (9:43.02), respectively. Also finishing second was the Lions' 4x400-meter relay team of Albert Sinegal, Cairo Thornton, Lyndon Wyse and Brad Dotson, who crossed the line in a season-best time of 3:18.00.
The Lions had four individuals finish third including junior Taylor Smith in the shot put with a season-best throw (40-10 ¼), senior Dean Laing in the shot put (38-5), sophomore Brandon Womack in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.72 and freshman Demetrius Holmes in the 110-meter hurdles (16.39). In addition, the Lions' 4x100-meter relay team of Anthony Valle, Lyndon Wyse, Brad Dotson and Cairo Thornton was third in a time of 42.61.
In the men's 400-meter dash, A&M-Commerce had six runners in the top 11 that all posted season-best marks. The Lions swept fourth through sixth place as senior Brad Dotson was fourth (49.28), junior Cairo Thornton was fifth (49.83) and senior Leonard Jackson was sixth (50.66). Freshman Desiree Spencer set a season-best in the long jump with a fourth-place performance with a leap of 17-1 ¼.
The next meet for the Lions is the Lone Star Conference Championships, starting on Thursday, May 7th with the multi-events hosted by Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
