Dean Laing is in Third After Day One of the Decathlon at the LSC Championships
Texas A&M University-Commerce senior Dean Laing is in third place in the decathlon with 3,117 points as the two-day competition got underway at the Lone Star Conference Championships in Kingsville, Texas on Thursday.
The senior won the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.29 for 797 points. He finished second in the 400-meter dash in a time of 56.51 for 540 points. Laing also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 39-7 for 610 points and was fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 5-8 ½ for 577 points and in the long jump with a leap of 19-9 ½ for 593 points.
Laing trails first place by 73 points which is held by Eldon Grimsold of West Texas A&M and is 55 points out of second which is held by Andy Henson of Abilene Christian. In 2007, Laing finished seventh at the LSC Championships in the decathlon despite a lingering hamstring injury.
The two-day event concludes on Friday and the preliminaries of the running events as well as the finals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 10,000-meter run. Finals will also be held in the field events including the hammer throw, the shot put, high jump, the long jump and the pole vault.
