John Carlos to Receive Platinum Legacy Award

Texas A&M-Commerce standout John Carlos will receive the Platinum Legacy Award on Friday as part of the University of Texas Minority Mentorship Symposium.

Carlos, who recently visited the campus in December, led then East Texas State to a Lone Star Conference Track and Field title in 1967 with a winning performance in the 100-yard dash (9.5) and the 220-yard dash (21.0). He also was a member of the fourth place 4x440-yard relay team.

University of Texas Head Women's Track and Field Coach Beverly Kearney created the annual event. The symposium, created as a forum for teaching, inspiring and mentoring student-athletes, has grown exponentially during its four years. It's now an event that provides opportunities for student-athletes to connect with successful people from all walks of life and learn how persistence can help you reach goals.

Carlos is one of four individuals who will receive the Platinum Legacy Award as part of the Gents of Distinction Dinner that will be held at the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center in Austin.
