WACO, Texas -- Competing against some of the top runners in the region, A&M-Commerce notched an impressive showing at the Michael Johnson Dr. Pepper Classic at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex on the campus of Baylor University. 10 Lions finished among the top-10 in their respective events, including a number of season-bests on the year.
The meet was highlighted by a pair of distance runners for A&M-Commerce as Chris Douglas finished first in the 800 meter run, posting a time of 1:54.31 - the second-fastest time of the season for the Lions. Douglas was joined in the top-10 by Tyler Hemenway, who finished sixth with a time of 1:55.95.
In the 1500 meter, Ross Hicks finished fourth with a 4:04.21 showing. Isaac Chelimo then placed second in the 3000 meter steeplechase (9:29.34), with Raman Singh placing ninth in the 5000 meter run with a season-low time of 15:29.00.
The Lion sprinters also had strong showings, led by John David Rollins placing second in the 100 meter dash with a career-best time of 10.74, shaving one-one hundredth off his previous career-best and team-low. Demetrius Holmes would go on to place 10th in the 400 meter hurdles, posting a time of 55.69.
Rollins made another appearance among the top-10, placing fifth in the long jump with a career-best leap of 7.18 meters. Khalil Henry also notched a career-best on the day, posting a height of 2.05 meters in the high jump. Matt Rich capped the Lion top-10 finishers, placing third in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 51.59 meters, giving A&M-Commerce five new season-bests on the day.
Up next for A&M-Commerce is the final tune-up meet before the Lone Star Conference Championships as the Lions head to San Marcos for the Texas State Invitational on Saturday, April 28. Following that meet, A&M-Commerce hits the track at Memorial Stadium, serving as the host institution for the 2012 LSC Championships May 3-5 in Commerce.
