SAN MARCOS, Texas -- In its final meet before hosting the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships, A&M-Commerce posted another strong showing at the Texas State Bobcat Classic. 10 Lions posted top-10 finishes in seven different events at Bobcat Stadium, competing against a handful of Division I teams from across the Lone Star state.
A&M-Commerce's top performance was recorded by John David Rollins, who finished first in the 100-meter dash with a program season-low mark of 10.79, beating out 16 other competitors, including runners from Texas A&M, Texas State and Houston. Rollins also notched a top-five finish in the long jump, placing fifth with a leap of 7.03 meters.
The Lions had a pair of top-10 finishers in the 400 meter dash as Ravi Dubose placed fifth (48.30) and Ernest Rickett finished eighth (48.52), giving Dubose his second top-10 finish of the afternoon after placing ninth in the triple jump (13.47 meters).
Senior Demetrius Holmes was the third A&M-Commerce competitor to notch a pair of top-five finishes, placing 10th in the 110 meter hurdles with a season-low time of 15.46 before finishing fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (54.82). He was joined in the 400 hurdles by teammates Hank Smith (56.26) and Elijah Burwell (56.79), finishing eighth and ninth respectively.
In the field events, Khalil Henry continued to be a valuable newcomer for A&M-Commerce, placing fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.95 meters. Daniel Dia just missed finishing in the top-10 in both the discus and shot put, but set a career-best in both events, posting a 47.29 meter showing in the discus and a 13.86 mark in the shot put.
A&M-Commerce now sets its sights on the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships with the added bonus of getting to run on its home track for the conference meet. Memorial Stadium will serve as the host venue with the top athletes in the LSC descending on Commerce May 3-5 vying for a shot at the Division II National Championships.
