COMMERCE, Texas – The opening day of the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships is in the books with a pair of Lions having strong showings in the first half of both the heptathlon and decathlon. Senior Aysha Moultrie currently sits second in the heptathlon after four events with 3,046 points while freshman James Lundy is eighth in the decathlon, registering 3,163 points.
Moultrie enters Friday's final three events with her sights clearly set on the top spot, trailing first-place Cathryn Rittenberry of Angelo State by just four points. She opened up the competition with a 15.33 110 meter hurdles, followed by a leap of 1.67 meters in the high jump. Moultrie then moved over to the throws, registering a shot put of 9.87 meters. But she saved her best performance for last, running the 200 meter dash in 24.77 seconds, setting a Lone Star Conference record for the heptathlon.
Lundy, competing in his first LSC Championship, held his own through the first five events of the decathlon, posting an 11.72 second performance in the 100 meter dash, jumped 6.23 meters in the long jump and notched a 9.11 meter showing in the shot put. Returning to the jumps area, Lundy finished third in the high jump with a 1.91 meter showing, then recorded a 53.41 time in the 400 meter dash.
Moultrie and Lundy get back on the track bright and early Friday morning with the decathlon getting underway at 10:30 a.m. and the heptathlon resuming at 11 a.m. Following the conclusion of the multi-events, the bulk of the Lone Star Conference Championships commences with the field events beginning at 2 p.m., followed by the running preliminaries at 6 p.m.
