2012 Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships
Trio of Lions Earn All-Lone Star Conference Accolades
COMMERCE, Texas – Our number 10 moment of the 2011-12 season takes us back out to the track at Memorial Stadium as the best track and field athletes in the Lone Star Conference descended on Commerce for the 2012 Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships. With the eyes of the entire conference watching, a number of Lions posted memorable performances, including a pair taking home individual LSC titles.
On the women's side, sophomore thrower Abigail Leaupepe-Tele was one of the top surprises of the conference meet for A&M-Commerce, posting a career day in the discus en route to taking home the LSC title. Leaupepe-Tele's best throw was a career-high mark of 45.18 meters (148' 2.74"), besting second-place Abilene Christian's Tara Riley by a full two meters. It was also one of two throws Leaupepe-Tele had on the year that surpassed the provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II national meet.
For the Lion men, jumper Khalil Henry solidified his place as A&M-Commerce top vertical jumper, posting a career-best leap of 2.06 meters (6' 9") to capture the men's high jump title. Henry, who bested his previous career high of 2.05 meters at the Michael Johnson Dr. Pepper Classic, was the lone jumper to surpass 2.01 meters as five other competitors jumped out at that height. His leap also provisionally qualified Henry for nationals as well.
A number of other Lions put in impressive performances at the conference meet, including Whitney Hargraves, who finished second in both the long jump (5.94 meters) and the triple jump (12.13 meters), earning All-LSC honors along with both Leaupepe-Tele and Henry. Senior Aysha Moultrie also notched a third-place finish in the heptathlon, including setting a conference and school record in the 200 meter dash at 24.77.
On the whole, the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships proved to be a solid experience for A&M-Commerce as 12 Lions earned top-five finishes on their home track, including a handful of career bests. In addition both the men's and women's 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams posted impressive performances, giving the young squads a boost of confidence heading into 2013.
