Lions Comeback Falls Short in 56-51 Loss to Abilene Christian
A&M-Commerce rallied from an early 16-point deficit and eventually tied the game early in the second half; however, they could not complete the come-from-behind victory as visiting Abilene Christian posted a 56-51 win over the host Lions.
Texas A&M University-Commerce (1-4) senior Nakazi Glover had her first career double double with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds and senior Ashley Murphy also had a double double with an 11 point and game-high 14 rebounds in the loss.
Abilene Christian (5-3) had three in double figures in the win as Jamie Meyer led the Wildcats with 18 points. Kat Kundmueller had a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Autumni Whitaker added 10.
Playing in their first home game of the season, the Lions did not record their first field goal until junior Geneveive Campbell made a layup with 10:16 left in the opening half.
Following the layup, the Lions they went on a 16-1 run as Glover hit a pair of 3 pointers and made two free throws in the spurt. The run cut the ACU lead to 18-17, with 5:44 left in the opening half.
Abilene Christian scored 10 of the next 11 points to answer the A&M-Commerce run. The resilient Lions refused to concede as back-to-back baskets by Ashley Murphy and Nikki Garner put A&M-Commerce down by five, 27-22, at the halftime break.
After an ACU free throw to start the second half, junior Deltrice Daniel hit back to back pointers and junior Anisha Ingram made a lay up to give A&M-Commerce its first lead of the game, 30-28, with 17:30 to go. The two teams exchanged the lead until a 10-0 run by the Wildcats gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.
Down the stretch, the Lions would manage to get the deficit down to one, 46-45, when Glover hit her third 3 pointer of the game with 6:53 to go.
The Lions have won 37 of their last 43 games at the A&M-Commerce Field House; however, two of the six losses have came at the hands of Abilene Christian. A&M-Commerce will next host Angelo State on Monday at 6 pm at the A&M-Commerce Field House.
