WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Lions fought all the way to the end and dropped a nail biter to number two in the conference Midwestern State, 74-58. Breanna Harris had another big night for the Lions knocking down 14 points and snatching 9 rebounds, only falling one rebound short of her eighth double-double of the season. The Lions will return home to host Cameron on Saturday, January 28th for their final meeting of the season at 6:00 PM.
The Mustangs came out and were all over the Lions immediately jumping out to a 10-2 lead. Kourtney Briscoe would get the ball rolling for the Lions as she made a layup and drawing a foul by Larissa Pitrat, getting her a free throw to get the Lions within five. The Lions would battle back to get within 3 off a Breanna Harris layup; however, the Mustangs would shake off the Lion offense and begin to pull away late in the first half off 4 free throws by Dianna Jones and igniting a 9 point run, giving the Mustangs a healthy 37-22 lead. Danielle Dixon and Apreia Booker would give the Lions a strong first half effort scoring 6 points apiece, followed up by Breanna Harris who scored 5 points in the first half.
The second half proved to be much more productive for the Lions as they began to slowly chip away the Mustang lead. Danielle Dixon would knock down 2 back-to-back jumpers starting a last chance rally outscoring the Mustangs 15-6 over a 7 minute span late in the second half. The Lions luck ran out as the Mustangs began battling out the last 4 minutes of the game and handing the Lions their second loss to Midwestern this season, 74-58.
The Lions had a tough time knocking down any three pointers in the game going 1-11, but the Mustangs didn't fare much better only hitting a slightly better 4-17. The Lions real problem was the dead-on accuracy of the Mustang free throw game; the Mustang offense hit 30 of their 42 free throw shots.
The number four conference scorer Savannah Carver proved why she is a threat to Lone Star Conference defenses by dropping 20 points on the Lions. Carver was followed by Kirsti Degelia who scored 15 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for the Mustangs. Eleven of Degelia's points came from free throw shots, only missing one shot.
The Lions will be returning home to welcome the streaking Cameron Aggies who are currently tied for third in the conference with Angelo State. The Lions had a hard fought battle with Cameron back on December 3rd dropping a 68-52 loss to the Aggies. The Lions will be looking to take advantage of Cameron's three game losing streak and return the favor on Saturday, January 28th at 6:00 PM.
