DALLAS -- High winds and chilly temperatures affected all 16 teams at the Dallas Baptist Classic, including A&M-Commerce which shoots a 43-over 640 over the final 18 holes at the Golf Club of Dallas. The Lions close out the two-day tournament 11th out of 16 teams with a 64-over 640.
The golfers experienced close to a 30-degree temperature change from Monday's opening round, but sophomore Chantry McMahan was able to close out the tournament tied for seventh with an 8-over 152 after posting a 9-over 81 over Tuesday's final round. It is McMahan's second top-10 finish of the season and the sixth of her Lion career.
Fellow sophomore Sara Diaz matched McMahan's 9-over 81, finishing tied for 13th in the individual standings with a 10-over 154. Diaz has now posted a top-20 finish in each of the Lions' first three tournaments of the season.
Chelsea McCoy shaved two strokes off her first round total, posting a 10-over 82 to finish third on the A&M-Commerce scorecard with a 22-over 166. She finished seven shots better than Holly Jenkins' 29-over 173 while freshman Brittany Riewe posted a 36-over 180 to round out the Lion scorecard.
A&M-Commerce began the day in a 10-team log jam, tied for ninth in the overall team standings. But the weather conditions spread out the herd as the Lions finished four shots back of both Newman and Incarnate Word (60-over 636), just missing a top-10 finish. A&M-Commerce did settle into a comfortable margin on 12th-place Cameron, besting the Aggies (78-over 654) by 14 strokes.
Host Dallas Baptist made a strong run over the final 18 holes, shooting a round-low 25-over 313 to move up three spots, capturing its host tournament with a 40-over 616. The Patriots edged out St. Edward's by one stroke as the Hilltoppers finished with a 41-over 617. Midwestern State (44-over 620) and Lubbock Christian (48-over 624) finished third and fourth while Grand Valley State and Tarleton State (49-over) tied for fifth in the overall standings.
The Lady Lions have one tournament remaining in the fall portion of its 2011-12 schedule, traveling to Lawton, Okla. for the Oklahoma Invitational. The two-day tournament at Fort Sill Golf Course gets underway Monday, Oct. 24, with the final round scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 25.
