LAWTON, Okla. -- A&M-Commerce got the final tournament of the fall season underway this morning, posting a 23-over 311 to sit seventh after the opening round of the Oklahoma Invitational at Fort Sill Golf Course.
After the opening 18 holes, A&M-Commerce remains in the hunt for a top-five finish as the Lions are one shot back of sixth-place Western Texas C.C. (22-over 310) and seven strokes behind fifth-place Newman (16-over 304). A handful of teams remain just out of reach with host Cameron (13-over 301) and Central Oklahoma (14-over 302) sitting third and fourth.
Individually, Chantry McMahan paced A&M-Commerce through the opening 18 holes, using a 1-over 37 over the front nine holes to finish with a 4-over 76, good enough for a tie for 16th overall. She leads teammate Haley Green by one stroke (5-over 77) as Green is currently tied for 24th in the individual standings.
Chelsea McCoy (6-over 78) helped contribute to the Lions' opening round success, sitting tied for 28th overall. Sara Diaz and Holly Jenkins rounded out the A&M-Commerce scorecard, shooting an 8-over 80 and a 9-over 81 respectively.
Lone Star Conference rivals Tarleton State and Midwestern State sit even after the opening round as both the TexAnns and Mustangs shot a 7-over 295 in round one and lead the host Aggies by six shots heading into Tuesday's final round.
Tuesday's final round gets underway with a shotgun start beginning at 9 a.m. A&M-Commerce will be teamed up with a pair of LSC rivals in Incarnate Word and Angelo State in the final round pairings as the Cardinals (30-over 311) and Rambelles (32-over 320) both have their sights set on overtaking the Lions.
