Doremus, Kelly garner LSC Scholar-Athlete honors

Texas A&M University-Commerce senior student-athletes Melissa DoRemus and Logan Kelly have been named 2008-09 Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete award winners, league officials announced on Wednesday.

Each year, the LSC awards one male and one female from each member institution for their accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and leadership on campus throughout the year.

Student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and must have exhausted their athletic eligibility to be considered for the honor.

DoRemus helped the A&M-Commerce women’s soccer team advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament with a 16-4-3 overall record in 2008. She finished the season with seven goals, including two game-winners, and garnered first-team all-conference honors. DoRemus wraps up her Lions career with 86 consecutive starts and ranks in the top five in points and goals scored.

Kelly, a distance runner for the A&M-Commerce Track and Field team, helped the Lions men’s team finish fifth at the LSC Championships. He turned in a season-best mark in the 5,000-meter run at the Michael Johnson Invitational (16:31:93) and followed with a ninth place finish in the 3,000-meter run at the 2009 Mean Green Twilight.

DoRemus and Kelly were each named to their respective sports LSC All-Academic Team as well.
