WOMEN'S SOCCER
Lions Begin 2008 Season with 4-2 Win Over No. 12 Drury
The Texas A&M
University-Commerce women's soccer team opened the 2008 season with
a 4-2 win over No. 12 Drury on Thursday afternoon at the
A&M-Commerce Soccer Complex.
Senior Melissa DoRemus scored two goals and
sophomore Chelsey Haight scored a goal and had two
assists in the win for the Lions, who win their season opener for
the 11th time in the 13-year old program.
Lasley ended a scoreless tie when she found the back of the net on
a header after receiving a pass from Alex Germain
and Haight in the 52nd minute. A little over three minutes later,
A&M-Commerce extended its lead to 2-0 when DoRemus took a pass
from the heel of Lasley, who had just picked up a crossing pass
from Haight for the lead. Lasley was involved again in the Lions
scoring when junior Lacy Alexander got ahead of
the Panthers' defense for a goal in the 59th minute to put the
Lions in front 3-0.
The Panthers came back with a pair of goals by Nicole Williams and
Mandi Little to trim the A&M-Commerce lead to one, 3-2, with
just under 15 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Lions came back with an insurance goal as Haight took advantage
of a 1-on-1 play with Drury goalkeeper Jessie Sanderson with a shot
to the top left corner of the goal for the final margin in the 77th
minute. Lasley continued to anchor an A&M-Commerce attack in
the final minutes of the contest with two more shots in the 81st
minute.
