Lions Knock Off Regionally-Ranked St. Edward's, 2-1
Texas A&M University-Commerce freshman Emma Stubblefield broke past the St. Edward's defense on a crossing pass from junior Lacy Alexander early into the 77th minute for the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over regional rival St. Edward's on Friday afternoon.
A&M-Commerce (5-1-1), who is currently ranked No. 7 in the latest NSCAA/adidas South Central regional rankings, were outshot by a 13-11 margin but it was the fourth and final shot of the match by the Euless, Texas native that proved to be the difference. Lions' goalkeeper Taylor Jordan had seven saves in the win and the win snaps a two-game losing streak in the series for the Lions.
St. Edward's (3-2), who is currently ranked No. 6 in the latest NSCAA/adidas South Central regional rankings, got on the board first in the 6th minute when Stacy Copeland scored on a breakaway to the lower right for the 1-0 advantage.
Alexander curved in the equalizer on a shot for the Lions from the right side to the top left corner of the goal in the 30th minute past SEU goalkeeper Tori Jorgensen, tying the match at 1-1.
Before Stubblefield found the back of the net, she earlier had challenged SEU goalkeeper Claire Tilton with back-to-back shots in the 70th minute.
Before Lone Star Conference play gets underway, next week, the Lions will host McNeese State on Sunday at noon at the A&M-Commerce Soccer Complex. The Cowgirls were picked to win the Southland Conference in 2008.
