Lions Knock Off No. 22 West Texas A&M, 1-0

Sophomore Chelsey Haight goal from 4 yards out in the 83rd minute led the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over host No. 22 West Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon.

The win moves A&M-Commerce (10-2-1, 4-1 LSC) into a tie with the Lady Buffs for first place in the Lone Star Conference. The Lions out shot WT by a 9-to-7 margin and 4-to-2 count on shots goal as junior Meagan Lasley had a game-high four shots to lead A&M-Commerce. Junior goalkeeper Taylor Jordan made a pair of saves en route to her second shutout of the season. As a defensive unit, the Lions have recorded six shutouts on the season.

West Texas A&M (12-2-1, 6-1 LSC) came into the contest averaging a league-leading 21.85 shots per game were held to seven by an aggressive Lions defense. The loss snaps a six-game winning streak by WT.

Lasley had a few opportunities to put the Lions on the board in the first half with shots in the 18th and 43rd minute, however, both opportunities came up short. A&M-Commerce outshot WT by 5-1 margin in the first 45 minutes as the two teams went into the intermission tied at 0-0.  

The intensity from both teams carried over into the second half as a pair of yellow cards were issued and remained scoreless until the game-winning goal by Haight at the 83:24 mark.

In the upcoming week, the Lions have three matches starting with its rescheduled contest against Texas Woman's on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Denton and home matches against Abilene Christian on Friday at 3 p.m. and Angelo State on Sunday at noon.
