Soccer Defeats Abilene Christian, 2-1
With a goal in each half, the Texas
A&M University-Commerce women's soccer team posted a 2-1 win
over Abilene Christian on Friday afternoon in Lone Star Conference
action at the A&M-Commerce Soccer Complex.
The Lions (11-2-1, 5-1 LSC) got on the board first for just the
fifth time in the season when junior Whitney
Hancock collected a loose ball from 20 yards for the early
1-0 advantage in the fifth minute. Hancock was involved in a
scramble of players before taking the ball out of the air for the
goal.
The Wildcats (7-6-2, 3-2-2) got the equalizer early into the second
stanza in the 51st minute on a Courtney Wilson goal. After
A&M-Commerce was whistled for a foul near midfield, a
collection of players centered around the 18-yard line awaited the
free kick by ACU's Jackie Gentile and Wilson fired a shot to the
lower left of the goal past the A&M-Commerce keeper and defense
to tie the contest.
Sophomore Chelsey Haight scored her team-leading
fifth game-winning goal in the 58th minute as the A&M-Commerce
attack got off a series of shots at ACU goalkeeper Crissy Lawson.
Lawson made saves on two of the opportunities before Haight picked
up an uncleared ball for the goal and eventual game-winner with
32:05 left in the match.
"I thought we were very fortunate. We scraped out the win and
that's what good teams do," said head coach Neil
Piper.
Clinging to a 2-1 advantage, A&M-Commerce goalkeeper
Taylor Jordan made a few clutch saves and
organized the Lions defense in the win. She had six saves in her
ninth win of the season for the Lions. Junior Lacy
Alexander had a match-high five shots as A&M-Commerce
out shot Abilene Christian by a 14-11 margin and a slim 8-7 count
on shots on goal.
The Lions will wrap up its regular season home schedule on Sunday
with a noon contest against Angelo State at the A&M-Commerce
Soccer Field. Prior to the contest, A&M-Commerce will honor
senior Melissa DoRemus, who has played and started
77-consecutive matches and ranks among the top players in school
history in goals, assists and points.
