Lions Secure No. 2 Seed at LSC Tournament with 6-0 Win Over East Central
The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's soccer team scored three goals in each half en route to a 6-0 shutout of East Central on Sunday afternoon in Ada, Oklahoma.
In the win, the Lions out shot the Tigers by a 35-to-7 margin and freshman Jordan McCarty scored twice and assisted on another; in addition, junior Meagan Lasley scored her LSC leading 18th goal of the season and assisted on two more.
A&M-Commerce improves to 13-2-3 and 7-1-2 in the Lone Star Conference and the Tigers of East Central fall to 5-11-2 and 1-8-1 in the LSC.
For the A&M-Commerce defense it is their eighth shutout of the season and for the offense, it is their ninth time scoring more than two goals in a game.
The Lions' got on the board in the 14th minute when junior Whitney Hancock scored on a header for her sixth goal of the season on a corner kick from junior Sarah Reed. For Reed, it is her sixth assist on the year. Just over six minutes later, McCarty scored on her own rebound for her second goal of the season.
Recently crowned homecoming queen, junior Lacy Alexander got involved with her fifth goal of the year, 10 minutes later. Alexander scored from the right wing after a pass from McCarty.
The Lions added to their lead with three more goals in the second half. McCarty scored her second goal of the contest after a passing from Lasley to extend the margin to 4-0. Lasley set up another goal on a crossing pass on the left wing to freshman Lindsey Durham for her first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute. A&M-Commerce closed out the scoring as Lasley scored on a free kick from sophomore Megan Monroe in the 76th minute.
Goalkeepers Randi Hafele, who got the start and Taylor Jordan each made two saves in their 45 minutes of action.
The contest concludes the regular season for A&M-Commerce, who advances on to the 2008 Lone Star Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed in Canyon, Texas and host West Texas A&M.
A&M-Commerce will receive a first round bye and await the winner of the No. 3 (Midwestern State) and No. 6 (Northeastern State) contest on Friday, November 7th at noon. In the other quarterfinal game, Central Oklahoma (No. 4 seed) will take on Abilene Christian (No. 5 seed). The winner of that game will play the host Lady Buffs at 2:30 pm on Friday.
The winner of the conference tournament will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
