Lions Fall to No. 22 Truman, 2-1, in Sweet 16
The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's soccer team saw its 2008 season come to an end with a 2-1 loss to host Truman State in a NCAA Third Round contest in Kirksville, Missouri on Thursday.
The Lions (16-4-3) found itself behind 2-0 at halftime when the Bulldogs' Riley Mahn sent a shot to the top left corner goal of the goal at the 15:21 mark and Katelyn Talcott converted a penalty kick at the 39:20.
Truman State (17-3-2) out shot A&M-Commerce by a 19 to 8 margin, including a 6 to 3 advantage in shots on goal. 10 different Bulldogs recorded a shot in the win including a game-high three each from Jaclyn Schuman, Jessica Wiegert, Kristin Haluszczak and Mahn.
After finding itself behind 2-0 at the halftime break, the Lions came back in the second half with seven shots after being held to just one in the first half.
Texas A&M University-Commerce senior Melissa DoRemus put the Lions on the board when she settled a scramble with a header past Jayne Grisham at the 47:41 mark.
For DoRemus, it was her
sixth goal of her final season as a Lion. She leaves the
A&M-Commerce soccer
program with 86-consecutive games with 86-consecutive starts as
well as she ranks in the top five in goals scored and in
points.
The Lions sought out the equalizer while battling winds of 18 mph and temperatures in the low 30's for the remainder of the contest. Sophomore Megan Monroe had a header attempt that sailed high in the 60th minute and a shot in the 89th minute was saved by Grisham.
Truman State advances to the Elite Eight,
where they will play Seattle Pacific on Saturday at 1 p.m.
