COMMERCE, Texas – A&M-Commerce wrapped up its four-match home stand against Eastern New Mexico Sunday as both teams were battling for the top spot in the Lone Star Conference. The Lions controlled tempo for the majority of the match, but a late goal by the Zias forced a 1-1 tie at the Lion Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.
The Lions' offense was brilliant posting 31 shots on Eastern New Mexico including 7 shots on goal. The Lion's first goal came from freshman forward Stephanie Neeley 56 minutes into the game with an assist from Samantha Huston. Neely played her first collegiate game for the Lion's, and she also took the lead with her first ever collegiate goal.
"It was awesome," said Stephanie Neely when asked about her goal. "I hope to play better next week if given the chance and hopefully score more goals. "
This was the Lion's first tie of the season and it came against conference leaders Eastern New Mexico. The Lion's controlled the game until the 89th minute when Eastern New Mexico tied the game with a goal from Angela Sandoval to send it into overtime. The Zias goalie Sierra Cardenas was fighting off Lion's shots all night and collected 6 saves out of 7 shots on goal.
When asked about the game tying goal Coach Neil Piper said, "We just gotta play through it, we just lacked discipline at the end of the game and it cost us two points."
Randi Hafele had another strong game for the Lion's snagging a total of 8 saves for the Lion's. Only 3 saves came in regular play, but Hafele made 5 saves when it came to the final 20 minutes of overtime. The Zias attempted to apply pressure, but Randi held the barrage of shots at the end of the game to get the Lion's 1 conference point.
A&M-Commerce is now going back on the road to face off with Angelo State who is currently ranked 3rd in the Lone Star Conference. This trip to San Angelo will mark the beginning of a five game road trip for the Lions. The Lion's currently are on a two game losing streak against the Ram Belles, but the overall record for these two is being led by Commerce with an 11-4-1 record. The game will take place on Friday, September 23 at San Angelo, Texas at 4:00 P.M.
