Neil Piper's Postgame Interview and Devon Herrman's Match-Clinching Shootout Goal
A&M-Commerce finished their first Conference Championship game in a thrilling shoot out victory over the Ram Belles of Angelo State University. This victory for the Lions has ended Angelo State's season and defeated them for the third time this season. It will also launch the Lions into the semi-finals against Abilene Christian who are the number 1 seeded team.
The Ram Belles offense struck first with a header goal by Brandie Debacker in the 38th minute of the game. The Lions battled back with Freshman Mid Fielder Cadie Annett dropping her first post season goal in the 77th minute off a Brionna Minde assist. The Lions battled through two overtime periods taking them to a shoot out. Randi Hafele stopped two penalty kicks brining the final shot down to Senior Captain Devon Herrman. Herrman hit the final penalty kick of the afternoon winning the shoot out 4-3.
"We battled for 110 minutes and then finished the game in a shoot out." said senior forward Devon Herrman. "This was definitely my most memorable moment as a Lion."
The Lion defense was battling off Angelo all night who had outshot A&M-Commerce 16 to 11. Angelo State had more shots, but the Lions had won the shots on goal battle 7-5. Both teams had trouble controlling field position.
Randi Hafele had another clutch performance for the Lions stopping two penalty kicks in over time to help the Lions win the shoot out. Hafele had an impressive afternoon keeping the Lions game close with 4 saves. The 4 saves move Hafele's total to 94 tying the 5th place record for most saves in a single season with Amber Ramoz. Hafele's record now improves to 9-8-2 and will get a chance to stop the number 1 seeded Wildcats and their high powered offense.
The Lions will remain in Abilene to face the top ranked Wildcats at their home field. The Lions have lost to the Wildcats twice this season, but have been controlling most of the games. The Lions have outshot the Wildcats 31 to 28 in two contests, but Abilene has walked away with 6 goals to the Lions one goal.
First Team All-Conference Andrea Carpenter will be leading the charge for the Wildcats with her 12 goals and 2 assists on the season. The goal will remain difficult to get in with First Team All-Conference goal keeper Elliot London who is 13-0-1 in conference play. The Lions will meet Abilene Christian tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in the Lione Star Conference semifinals.
