DEVON HERRMAN NAMED LSC'S 2012 NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR HONOREE

COMMERCE, Texas – Former Lion soccer standout Devon Herrman has been named the Lone Star Conference's honoree for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year award, announced today. Each school is eligible to submit one nominee for the award, with the conference picking one honoree to become eligible for the national competition.

Herrman was a major factor for the Lion soccer program for the past three seasons, starting all 56 games in a Lion uniform and racking up 14 goals and eight assists. She was a three-time All-Lone Star Conference selection, earning first team honors in 2009 was a second team selection in 2010 and 2011. Herrman served as team captain as a senior and was recognized as A&M-Commerce's Soccer Player of the Year.

Off the field, Herrman was just as vital to the A&M-Commerce athletic program, earning Academic All-District honors all three seasons and was a two-time LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll selection. In addition to her performance in the classroom, Herrman played a key role in the community, serving as the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president in 2011-12 and working extensively in community service projects during her time as a Lion.

The NCAA established the Woman of the Year Award in 1991 to celebrate the achievements of women in intercollegiate athletics. Now in its 22nd year, the award is unique because it recognizes not only the athletics achievements of outstanding young women, but also their academic achievements, community service and leadership.

NCAA member institutions from all three divisions nominated their own woman of the year. To be eligible, these women must have competed and earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport and must have completed eligibility in their primary sport.

NCAA schools across the country nominated 429 individual for the award, one of the most prestigious the NCAA offers at any level. The field will be narrowed down to 30 finalists – 10 from each division – in early September with the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year being announced in October.
