COMMERCE, Texas – Lions drop opener of five game home stand, 2-1, to Angelo State. A&M-Commerce found themselves on the short end of a three-goal spurt by both teams late in the second half and could not pull even in the final nine minutes.
The Rambelles of Angelo State controlled the ball for most of the first half. Early on the Rambelles were able to put together multiple chances but were unable to put any of them past Lion goalkeeper Tracey Rogers. A&M-Commerce had one really good chance when Cadie Annett had a header be turned back by a defensive player to keep the score tied at zero late in the first half.
During the second half the Lions were able to gain more possession of the ball turned that into scoring chances. Chances by Anitra Wright, Eva Brutto and Callie Annett were al turned away by Angelo State goalkeeper Danielle Edwards. In the 77th minute Angelo State broke into the scoring column first when Selena Alavarez put in header off a cross from Lauren Cranes after a foul by A&M-Commerce gave Angelo a free kick.
Less than two minutes later Eva Brutto pulled the Lions back even with a header off a corner kick by Brionna Minde found Brutto at the far post. Unfortunately three minutes later Maggie Schaffer controlled a lob from Lauren Carnes outside the 18-yard box took one dribble and put the game-winner past Rogers.
The A&M-Commerce Lions return to action as they take on the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Sunday September 23 at 12 p.m. at Lion Soccer Field.
